Leonhard is a native of Tony, Wisconsin, and played at Flambeau High School, and then for the Badgers. He played ten seasons in the NFL, and then joined the Badger football staff in 2016. He served as interim head coach when Paul Chryst was fired in 2022, but did not stay at Wisconsin when Luke Fickell became Badger head coach, and instead, joined the Illinois staff and worked under former Badger coach Brett Bielema last season.
